Jim, what version/release are you seeing this on? Are you investigating Evan's suggestion about the database group PTFs? I'd be very interested to see if you find a solution to this, as a colleague was telling me about one of our clients for whom we need to sign on at 6:00 am if we ever want to "design" a query, cuz sometimes, she told me, it will take up to TWO HOURS for the query to exit without actually running the query. I had never heard of that before, and it somewhat surprising to see your post.
