Jim,

I've been in that position and ended up powering down the system, then
powering it back on.  I've forgotten the exact sequence, but it did
involve holding down the power button for more than a brief moment.  If
you're in manual mode when you power down, you can switch it to normal
mode while it's powered off and then press the power button to bring it
back up.

Not very elegant, but a slight improvement over yanking the power cord
:).
