FWIW, newer Zebras have an integrated Ethernet/PrintServer card, so you just
have to plug in any handy CAT-5 cable and away you go. Very simple to setup
and use.

For the record, we are printing 9000+ labels/day using 2 Zebra 140XiIII
printers, and will be adding a second printer to handle an additional 3000+
labels/day. All barcoded, all good quality. (That's just one project, we
have another project also using the 140Xi series that does ~15000 labels/day
on 2 printers)

Two of these printers are directly lan attached, one is connected through an
Intermec 802.11 RF hub. (As is the PC and Infoprint21 across the romm from
it.) None utilize a Jetdirect server. (We do have one earlier model we use
for development and testing, it does have a small (think dongle sized)
printserver plugged into the back of it.)

Our inhouse experience with Intermec printers has not been good, we've
always got one either going to or from the service center. (and they're only
used to print a couple dozen labels/day!) The Zebras on the other hand have
held up under continous abuse for a very long time.

We originally had installed two Printronics pin-fed, high-speed laser
printers to try to use cut-sheet labels, but they consistantly failed to
produce good quality labels at the volume we require. Ditto for using HP
4050s and Lexmarks.

Anyways, your requirements and mileage may vary, good luck.

When I got here we were using Zerbra Z4000's connected to a PC. I called
Zebra and a TCP/IP interface for this printer was pretty expensive. So I
bought a HP Jetdirect box and attached the printer to that, works fine.

I've converted all types of printers to TCP/IP printers by using Jetdirect
boxes.
