Dear Dave,

Most of the major thermal printer manufacturers (for example but not a
complete list - Datamax, Intermec, IBM/Printronix, Intellibar, Intermec,
SATO, Zebra/Eltron) now offer reliable internal or external Ethernet
adapters for their complete line of thermal printers.

The thermal printer niche still includes the language understood by the
thermal printer as part of the value add proposition for purchasing the
device. Thus for example if you create an application in-house to speak to a
Zebra printer, it will typically not make any sense to a thermal printer
from a manufacturer other than Zebra and sometimes it will unfortunately not
make any sense to a different model of thermal printer from the same
manufacturer.

This lack of common language tends to be the most frustrating aspect of
purchasing a thermal printer because you sometimes need to change vendors to
get an improvement in performance or functionality as your business
application matures.

Supply Chain Systems Magazine (formerly idsystems) published a good article
on using Bar Code Printers in the Enterprise in their Jan. 2001 issue. They
have it online at the following URL:

HTH

Best Regards,

/Paul
