Interesting. So what is management proposing to replace the 
database/application with. ORACLE?
Do they know how much an ORACLE D.B.A. costs?
This is where the Total Cost of ownership becomes an important argument.
However, once the seed has been planted, its difficult to cut the weeds out.

The software on their AS/400 is from a AS/400 specific supplier, plus it
has to be said they have also made significant investment in modifying the
software.
I think a good line of attack would be getting their 'owning' company to
lose the Unix and move across to the 400 platform!!!
