IIRC, an AFP data stream actually generates a bit map of the printed
page and sends that to the printer. For every page.

An IPDS data stream, on the other hand, sends the bit map of the
overlay to the printer once, then sends just the variable data for
each page. If the printer understands IPDS properly, it's supposed
to be able to cache overlays at the printer for later reuse.

When we first started using overlays, we were sending AFP streams to
remote printers, and they c-r-a-w-l-e-d. We then got the IPDS
interface cards, and things returned to manageable speed.
