RE: Backup power supplies

We are in the process of looking at generators and replacing our UPS also.
When we get the generator we were instructed to put more stuff on it -
likes lights, air conditioning, etc.  Not only are these things more
critical in a longer time frame (you could do without air conditioning for
45 minutes but not a day or so) but their constant load is actually better
for the generator.  It was once explained to me where it made sense but I
forget the exact words.

We are still in the early stages.  We were looking at Leibert.  Also a
company called Generac.

The status is "It's still in our budget.  XXXX from facilities is handling

Ron,
Thanks, we are more concerned (right now anyway) with keeping the system up
for a remote site that might not be having the same power interruption that
we would experience.  Because they are now running on our AS/400, we would
lose the production or shipping for two sites not to mention the political
egg on our face because "they didn't have these kind of problems before we
moved them onto our AS/400" kind of thing.  Was it a large manufacturing
site?  I can't imagine the size generator we would need to keep things
running here but then again maybe I just don't know what is out there for
this kind of thing.

Ed,
I worked at a manufacturing company that had a backup generator.  We had a
UPS in place that would takeover for the time it took for the generator to
get up and going.  Of course only the things on that UPS had no problems
when the power switched.  Any terminal that was signed on would vary itself
off and then would have to be reset.  The company would switch to generator
backup at peak demand times when the weather was extremely hot or extremely
cold.  The comapny was able to negotiate better power rates by agreeing to
this arrangment.  The only problem we actually had was the one I mentioned
about things getting varies off.
