As I mentioned in my reply the other day, V5R1 has brought a long needed 
enhancement in that area and added the job attribute "Message reply". It'll 
tell you whether it's a specific message needing a reply or it's a job waiting 
for the next message to arrive at a given message queue.

Unfortunately IBM didn't go all the way (as they did with the writer APIs) and 
also provide message queue and -key, which would have given us an easy way to 
programagically deal with the message - hope to see that feature one day.

Although it's fairly easy to detect which jobs have a MSGW status, it's not so 
easy to determine whether that status results from a job waiting on a reply to 
an inquiry message or waiting on RCVMSG with WAIT(nnn).
