> Its aboubt as good as DB2/400 but is far cheaper and scales nicely at a fraction of the cost. We have had many posts on this list about cost. I have always stressed what is usually called the TCO (total cost of ownership) in that the solution represents all costs for a 3-5 year period. Comparing base hardware and DB cost is a small part of the picture. Yes, many business owners only want to look at the initial or monthly payment, but whether you are in-house or consultant, our job is to present reliable, cost-effective solutions. The TCO studies still put iSeries ahead of or on par with intel based servers. see http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/conslt/ for the IDC Total Cost of Ownership study of 9/2001. Now if we are going to talk about bargain brand stuff-(one current client did this and is up about 90% of the time-totally unacceptable). btw-many have documented that SQL server does not scale well on the high end volume. your indication of a 7K solution indicates a low-end, few users solution. Quite often they will put up with a less-than-reliable solution. They are used to re-booting. imho jim franz ----- Original Message ----- From: "Server Dave" <d2ba@xtra.co.nz> To: <midrange-l@midrange.com> Sent: Friday, September 28, 2001 12:42 AM Subject: Re: DB2/400 comparisons with other relational databases (specifically Oracle and SQL Server) > Mandy, > As a general rule from now on I would only recomend SQL2000 Enterprise for > any new > applications-It beats Oracle hands down, has all the bells and whistles > management tools/dev enviroment that Oracle has not got yet. > Its aboubt as good as DB2/400 but is far cheaper and scales nicely at a > fraction of the cost. > > cheers Dave > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Jim Franz" <franz400@triad.rr.com> > To: <midrange-l@midrange.com> > Sent: Friday, September 28, 2001 3:37 PM > Subject: Re: DB2/400 comparisons with other relational databases > (specifically Oracle and SQL Server) > > > > I don't think you will find a specific comparison to db2/400, but you > > certainly will find stuff on db2. see > > http://www-4.ibm.com/software/data/db2/ > > > > to see how db2/400 is diff than other db2's (almost no diff) > > http://www.as400.ibm.com/developer/db2/db2common.html > > > > Also the IDC Total Cost of Ownership paper, specific to the AS400 is at > > http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/conslt/ > > also see http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/db2/ > > > > ancient news - comparison from 1997 showing db2/400 on top > > http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/db2/dbms.htm > > > > agood description of db2/400 > > http://www.as400.ibm.com/developer/bi/bipaper.html > > > > a comparison of db2 7.2 to oracle 9i > http://www-4.ibm.com/software/data/db2/ > > hth > > jim > > > > ----- Original Message ----- > > From: <mandy.shaw@Notability.com> > > To: <midrange-l@midrange.com> > > Sent: Thursday, September 27, 2001 8:01 AM > > Subject: DB2/400 comparisons with other relational databases (specifically > > Oracle and SQL Server) > > > > > > > I've had a request from a customer for any independent reports/white > > papers > > > I can find on this subject.
