I don't have much to add to what others have said. Just wanted to point out 
that even if APIs are available, they probably wouldn't help much with speed. 
The speed of physical tape operations will likely be the big limiter here. Your 
best bet is to work on the logical design of your process. Initializing your 
tapes with unique identifiers (maybe nothing more than MONDAY, TUESDAY, etc.) 
is a big step in this.
