This would not be an upgrade, per se...just building a box with the same config, applications, and data as the old box. It can be made to work, the big problem being if the old box has a real complicated configuration, eg., lots of mission critical com lines, many authorization lists, or other "complicated" (and aggravating to set up) stuff. I've not tried this kind of thing on V5 (of course), but I've done it successfully on V4.2 and V4.3. Make sure you have a window of time (and printouts of everything possible) to straighten out things which don't work correctly, there are apt to be these things either way you "upgrade". Be prepared for authority problems and the like. I'd try to restore a couple program libraries and data to the new box first, then see if they converted correctly. See if programs run, data gets converted correctly, and things like job descriptions come across OK. Come up with a plan to get the user profiles and authorities moved, they may restore or you may have to write programs to re-create them. Get a copy of the config and simply re-build the configuration on the new box. Be very careful of QGPL and QUSRSYS getting "back-levelled". If everything goes OK, then just "rebuild" the new box, rather than calling it a migration or upgrade. If this was the way I wanted/needed to go, I'd just do it, especially if you are able to do a "test run". AS/Resources, Inc.
