This isn't going to make you feel any better. The best course of action I've found is to go out to the store, buy a new hard drive (they're not that expensive when compared to the time you spend trying to make work what you've got), and load everything from scratch. You'll have months of trouble free computing, maybe even a year, before you have to do it again. And when that happens, hey you've got an extra hard drive from the last time. I no longer download software unless I don't care about losing it, or at a minimum I also buy the cd, and I configure everything to put my data off of the same folder so I don't have to search it out.
