Thank you. I found by trial & error that I could not use the actual names
defined in the prototype as constants on the callp statement. I like how
you passed the length parm. I am curious about the cmdopt parm in the
prototype. What would I use this for? Would it be for a return error code
or other parameters for certain commands?

Thanks again,

Try the following:

 *  Prototype for runqry
d CMD pr extpgm('QCMDEXC')
d command 3000 options(*varsize)
d const
d cmdlength 15p 5 const
d cmdopt 3 options(*nopass)
d const
  *
d ovrdbf s 80
  *
  * Runqry for the requested file
  *
C EVAL ovrdbf = 'OVRDBF WHLDE1 SHARE(*YES)'
c callp cmd(%trim(ovrdbf) : %len(%trim(ovrdbf)))
