> OS/2 is old news - IBM threw in the towel on that a long time ago. Your point being? Remember, your statement was that IBM didn't know how valuable the desktop market was. They lost the fight for the desktop, that doesn't mean they suddenly quit thinking it was important! Instead they focused efforts on technologies to reduce the influence that the desktop has on their other markets. Java is an example of one of those technologies. I think IBM has demonstrated over and over that they completely understand the importance of the desktop market. But I also think they've noticed that they might not be going to win that desktop market and are thus chasing what profit centers they can. > And they've done zip-nada-nothing for the Smartsuite since taking over > Lotus. What should they do? > Their investment in Lotus was for DomiBlows - period. There is no question that Notes played a big part in the purchase of Lotus. IBM could not have guessed that so many Microsoft faithful would ignore a perfectly good proven technology to wait years for MS to produce yet another bug ridden "wanna be." But another reason that IBM felt this was a worthwhile purchase was to provide OS/2 desktops with a current suite. I think it seemed like Microsoft might not be willing to port theirs. > John Taylor Chris Rehm javadisciple@earthlink.net If you believe that the best technology wins the marketplace, you haven't been paying attention. +--- | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +---
