*EVERYONE* should ensure that
they go to the IBM Redbooks site and ensure they have a copy of 'AS/400
Diagnostic Tools for System Administrators', print off the PDF file and keep
it within 5 feet of their AS/400 ("Ma, why won't the rebel call it an
i-series?") next to 'AS/400 Service Functions', 'Basic System Operations and
Problem Handling', 'Backup and Recovery Guide' and the appropriate service
manuals for their system. Usually a
combination of any 2 of these books identifies most AS/400 related problems
before I have to involve IBM - it's a lot quicker to say "Disk 7 is failing"
then "I've got a strange code on my little LCD screen"...

After the
machine craps out there is a way that you can get it to take a dump as you
are bringing it back up, before it re-initializes storage, so that you are
dumping the machine in the state where it lost its mind. I think it is a
combination of using the control panel functions and DST. Then once you
have the dump, IBM can dial in and look at it or you can send it to them.
Sorry I can't be more specific, but when I needed to do this I had IBM on
the phone telling me what to do, what areas to dump, what parameters
to specify, etc. so my procedure would probably not apply to your
specific problem. I assume if you are posting out here first, you probably
don't have a SupportLine contract. It could get expensive paying by the
hour, but if it is an important system and the PTFs don't help you, perhaps
it would be worth it to try this route.
