Hi Steve, Tom, For receipts, an email is sent back to the sender when the recipient opens the email. In OutLook Express, and I assume most other email clients, this can be made optional -- never do it, ask me, or always do it. The more insidious problem, as I understand it, is for example if an email has a link to an image on the sender's computer, when the recipient opens the email, the recipients email browser has to retrieve the image from the senders computer. The sender can monitor that activity, and for most consumers, see the IP address currently assigned to their PC. For most businesses, they would probably see the IP address of the firewall. Or, they could attach the actual email address as part of the filename of the image. When the email reader sends a request for the file, they strip off the email address and record it, then return the image. That's just a guess though.
