What exactly are you looking for in a migration path? Client server and web software architecture is so different and so much more complex than traditional AS/400 programming. It's like writing a book and expecting your word processor to provide a migration path to a movie. It's so easy to blame IBM, but the expectations are so unrealistic. The migration path is the same as it is for any other platform -- pick from this week's most prominent emerging technologies and learn them. -Jim James Damato Manager - Technical Administration Dollar General Corporation <mailto:jdamato@dollargeneral.com> -----Original Message----- From: Jim W [mailto:jimw2001@hotmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, July 03, 2001 12:21 PM To: MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com Subject: RE: Free OS/400 Ahh, but by not GIVING us the decent migration path, they are forcing us to come up with that also. By charging a small fortune for the green screen interface maybe it will force us to start using the system as a server instead of as a baby mainframe. --------- I'd tend to agree, if only they gave us a decent migration path. Webfacing is a poor solution; it's really just a glorified screen-scraper. But then again, the concept of moving an existing program from monolithic green screen to a true client/server design is a lot of work that can't easily be packaged and sold, and developing a standard client/server infrastructure is a lot of work which doesn't immediately benefit IBM's bottom line.
