I was talking to an IBM person once and asked about IBM giving OS/2 out to
the open source community.
One of the reasons he said it wouldn't happen is the fact that IBM still
has agreements about the sections of Code that MS worked on.
And yes parts of NT's low level stuff still had OS/2 stuff in it.

And a KEY part of NT was OS/2...

It was, oh, 4 or 5 years ago and we were putting Windows NT on a Toshiba
notebook
(this was at the time that it did not come as an option, it came with 
WFW).
We
had talked with Toshiba and they said it wasn't supported but they were a
GREAT
help with video and audio drivers, etc !  So the install went OK and we
were
testing some stuff and the thing BLOWS UP and starts spitting out OS/2
error
messages with the IBM trademark and date !!! This machine had NEVER had
OS/2 on
it (although our R&D folks WERE running OS/2 on desktop PC's). So it MS's
rush to
dump IBM they had not managed to rewrite the core of NT...
