Not having set one on in aeons, I'll address this fragment of your email.
The first place to look is the writer's job log.  WRKWTR *ALL on the
printerless system. Select the writer and press F17 to work with the job.
Option 10 to see the job log, F10 to see the details.  That should be a good
place to start the diagnostic work.
