Eric, 
 As far as programming education goes El Centro
College in Dallas,TX used to offer AS400 programming
courses. I Enrolled in one while I was still a
mainframer but was hired as an AS400 pgmr before I
completed it. Hopefully they have since upgraded from
their B model.
