It didn't die. It lives on as CA/Express Toolkit, and I use it regularily. It just hasn't seen the same level of development resources since IBM switched their focus to Java. The V5R1 release of CA/Express (finally) brings it up to the current OLEDB level. I think it's important that IBM continues to enhance the toolkit themselves, instead of relying upon third-party vendors. After all, the competition (MS, Oracle, DB2/Universal) all provide a driver for their DB's.
