Al, I think Peter was talking about a user Alias longer than 10 character that becomes part of the user profile. The native signon would be by the 10 char user profile object name like normal. The alias would normally be identical to the standard user name, but could be optionally changed to be longer than 10. Note: this is not a hot topic with me, I can just see how it could be of benefit if dealing with networked resources such as QNTC and the like..... Maybe they'll do something similar with user profiles -- a 10-character AS400 userid and a related 128-character userid for other networks, something like they do with system directory entries and SMTP email addresses.
