On one of our systems we do the dedicated system save during the day. However it is rather unique. The only application it runs is Domino and it is fully clustered with another 400 which runs Domino. Anyway, you sign on with a special user profile with limited capabilities, an initial program and a default menu of *SIGNOFF. And you do this in a computer room with ID cards required to open the doors. It shuts down stuff in an orderly fashion, then it does the big whammy and gets it into a restricted state, and verifies this. Then it runs the RCLDLO, RGZDLO, RCLSTG, SAVSYS, SAVLIB *NONSYS, SAVDLO, SAV, writes out to a file how long each individual step took. When it is all done it submits 2 jobs to a single string jobq, (remember we are in a restricted state so they don't run yet). First job does a simple delay for 5 minutes. Second job varies on all sorts of stuff and starts stuff, (no, it is not QSTRUP, we don't modify that.) After submitting these jobs, it PWRDWNSYS *IMMED RESTART (*YES) IPLSRC(B). System IPL's and after the 5 minute delay, the varyon kicks in. We've been quite happy. And the system is smoking fast so it takes under 2 hours from start to finish. I find it ridiculous that, after all these years, IBM still has not given us a solution to this gaping hole. Do others feel that way? Most shops I know of can only do a dedicated system backup (which, IMHO, is the only sane way to do a backup; your comments on SWA considered) off hours in the middle of the night, and the only way I've been able to figure out how to accomplish this is to sign on to the console prior to leaving for the day and start the backup application that waits until late at night to start the ENDSBS *ALL and run the backup. Most AS/400 shops aren't big enough to be able to justify the expense of a night operator. The so-called way to secure this is to lock the console using the key on the display. It would seem to be a no-brainer (well, consider who's talking here, o.k.?) to allow a batch job to run from the controlling subsystem in a restricted state. But what do I know? I have taken a renewed interest in this pet peeve of mine, considering my new responsibilities. - Dan Dan Bale says "BAN DALE!"
