I've been on the Topica Lawson_SysAdmin list for a couple of months now. I've been amazed that 90% of the issues posted to the forum are bloody complicated problems that have no relevance to the AS/400 implementation of Lawson. Lawson's architecture on NT/Unix and Oracle/Informix/SQL seems incredibly complex. We're running other large Unix/Oracle applications that don't require nearly the same care and feeding. If keeping at the absolute latest Lawson apps release level is not an major issue, and you have the time and budget for a re-implementation on the AS/400 I would recommend that you go for it. Of course, my opinion is extremely biased. -Jim -----Original Message----- From: Chris Beck [mailto:CBeck@good-sam.com] Sent: Friday, May 18, 2001 9:33 AM To: MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com Subject: Re: Lawson? Thanks for all the replies. I guess, I heard pretty much what I thought I would not many people are real happy with them. We currently run it on Unix/Oracle, but were interested in the 400 because the cost of owner ship is so much lower, and it takes so many less people to make a 400 run compared to how many it takes to keep a 6000 up and going. I really can't go into detail of what I think of Lawson, but I don't think it suits a large company either. You are right, they assume to many things. >>> cbmorehead@nokuse.com 05/17/01 06:41PM >>> Chris, My previous employer ran Lawson. We had two main complaints. 1 - Unix & NT always got enhancements and updates first. We (AS/400 users) had to wait additional months for the same functionality. 2 - They were extremely behind in their development of the healthcare enhancements for the materials management module. When we bought Lawson we understood that we would be getting that update in a few months. Two years later when I quit to take the job I have now they still hadn't finished development (for the AS/400 - NT & Unix had it). In general, my understanding from the users was that it would not be appropriate for small - medium sized companies. I.e. the level of sophistication and flexibility of the software also created a level of complexity. It seemed that they assumed that some tasks would be divided up among multiple people, and the software was designed as such, whereas in a smaller company a single employee would handle it. However, if you are looking at packages like JDE, PeopleSoft, or SAP then I think you should also look at Lawson.
