We are evaluating Ops Console now and we have an evaluation system set up.
Getting it set up was no picnic but we finally got it working.

It has been working pretty well for a few weeks. We access it with
PCAnywhere. The only problem we have is, if we have to reboot the PC we
sometimes can't get the console to come back up, although the control panel
comes right up. This has happened a couple of times and the only way we can
get it back is to IPL the AS/400. We can do that with our test machine but
it will be a big no-no when we move it to production.

Yes, I thought I've heard Al bash it, too. I found a reference in
the
archives where he is quoted as saying "Ops Console doesn't work
well". I
forgot to note how old that post was. Perhaps Ops Console has
matured by now?

As a company with AS/400s in five very remote locations, three of
which have
no operations staff (save for someone who changes the backup tapes
daily), we
need to get to the point where we can have the most possible
absolute control
of these systems from our HQ location. The best scenario is where I
can have
system console access as well as system panel access from my
desktop.

What little I've been able to glean from the archives (it was
running
exceptionally slow today), it seems that many people have had
problems getting
Ops Console set up. I saw no after-successful-setup complaints of
Ops
Console. Is that basically a true statement? (Maybe not. I see
that Marty
has ongoing problems, but uncertain as to whether it is Windows or
OS/400.)

I saw a reference in the archives dated last April where Glenn
Birnbaum asked
the question on setting up RCP access. Glenn, if you still out
there, could
you please relate your experience thus far? Also, a Dave Dahlstrom
(??? not
getting any response from the archives at this moment) replied to
Glenn with
what sounded like an offer for a solution he had, although my
memory's vague
        on this point.

It seems like Ops Console is free, included with Client Access. But
I saw one
reference that indicated that it was not free. What's the scoop
with that?

I know Al Barsa has bashed Ops Console at lot here, but we use it
with no
        problems.

I am investigating some options for getting system console access
for our
        remote AS/400s.

I have seen information on a commercial product called CompuMaster
TwiNet
        Gateway.

But I also found a sidebar article in the December 2000 issue of
News400
        that
spoke of Operations Console. I came away thinking that this might
be a
        good
solution, too. But I've also heard some less-than-positive comments
about
        Ops
Console, although never any specifics. What makes Ops Console
"infamous"?

        Hmmm...

Unless your console was actually the infamous Ops Console!

(not that I would wish that on anyone)
