     >Is there a product like PKZIP for the AS400? Where can I get some
     info?-web site?
     ------------

My boss asked me something similar a few months ago. This is what I
     found:

     PKZIP AS/400
     Commercial software
     Ascent Solutions, Inc., http://www.asizip.com/

     GNU zip (gzip)
     Freeware
The zipped files are created with an extension of .gz but you use
Winzip to extract these files on Win95, 98 and NT systems.

gzip is the GNU compression utility from the Free Software Foundation.
     Learn more about gzip: http://www.gzip.org/
     Download gzip for the AS/400://www.gzip.org/gzip-as400.zip.
Gzip is also available from IBM, along with other unsupported GNU
utilities for the AS/400, by sending an e-mail request to
     rchgo400@us.ibm.com. The AS/400 supplies a UNIX-type shell with
UNIX-type utilities (e.g. grep, cat, head, mv, sed). Qshell
Interpreter (qsh) and Qshell Utilities (available as OS/4000 Option
30), provide a standard command interpreter and standard shell
commands for AS/400. Not all UNIX utilities are provided. Qshell
Interpreter provides 47 built-in utilities and Qshell Utilities adds
another 50. All UNIX utilities, however, are not provided. For
example, at this time lex, yacc, and awk are not supported. Gzip is
     supported, of course.

     zlib
     Freeware
zlib is a free, general-purpose compression library.
Learn more about zlib at http://www.cdrom.com/pub/infozip/zlib/
     download at http://homepage1.nifty.com/uzaemon/#download
One of the authors was responsible for/part of the creation of PKZip.
     These guys also wrote gzip.

There was a 4th utility that was Java, but I didn't write the name
down since it wasn't something we would use - Java, that is.
