I've found this question and answer in the September 1999 Tech Corner
of News400. I think Paul Conte answered this.
________________________________________________________________
Q: I have an application that runs on a V4R1 AS/400 and needs to
access data (interactively) from an Oracle7 database that runs on
a Unix box. How can I access Oracle from the AS/400 without buying
a separate product to do this?

A: You can access a non-UDB/400 database from an AS/400 application
by using OS/400's SQL Client Integration (SQLCI) feature. SQLCI lets
you specify an application requester program (ARD) on the ADDRDBDIRE
command. The ARD routes AS/400 SQL requests to the non-IBM database.
Oracle provides an ARD called Oracle Access Manager for AS/400 as well
as other tools to support IBM's Distributed Relational Database
Architecture (DRDA). For more information about this ARD, visit Oracle's
Web page at http://www.oracle.com/gatewa ys/cd/products/group3.html.

I hope this helps some of you Oracle guys...
Ray

I've tried the port that the SQL guys think it is, I've tried sqlserv, still
no good.

A search on Deja (now google), turned up this snippet that says it doesn't
work:

>Unfortunately SQL Server does not support DRDA AS (server-side), which
>would enable (for example) RPG with embedded SQL on AS/400 to access SQL
>Server tables. OS/400 does support a DRDA "application request driver"
>exit program, that could also enable access to SQL Server, but I don't
>know if anyone has written an ARD for SQL Server.
>Karl Hanson

I'd love to make this work. Anymore details that you can post would be
appreciated.

Unfortunately I am no SQL Server expert. I just know that it can be done,
with some limitations. On the WRKRBDDIRE command you can specify the port
name. The default is *DRDA. Check out what port the SQL server is
listening at and use that port. The default is sqlserv or 118. You can
enter the service name or the port number directly.

Chris:

I've tried this and can only access AS/400 databases. I can guess that the
SQL server has to be running DRDA? How can I tell the SQL server guys what
they need to configure on the SQL Server? They have heard of DRDA but never
used it.

The SQL server database that I am trying to connect to is running a canned
imaging application. There is no real "SQL Server" expert at my customer.
