The president of MENSA one year was a London taxicab driver, not a scientist
or even particularly academically well qualified.

Boy, it went by me completely the first time. When I was a heat treater I
met quite a few people--machinists, electricians, welders, and others in
skilled trades--who were every bit as smart as the smartest people I've met
in programming. One of my teachers in the vocational program I attended,
who made his living as a metallurgical consultant and had strong academic
credentials, said "I've met old heat treaters and machinists who were better
metallurgists than most metallurgists I know."
