I don't work directly with any programmers straight out of school, but we
have plenty around here that I get to talk to on occasion. I don't think
they are less knowledgeable. I think the subject matter has expanded
tremendously, over the last 10 years especially. Therefore, when they get
out of school, they probably know a smaller percentage of the total. I don't
expect some kid who's been studying Booch diagrams and OO languages for the
last 4 years to know who invented RPG or how to code it.
