One can use an XML Schema instead of DTD.

XML-RPC is well documented and a standard. Does not SOAP use XML?

IBM is committing to open source implementations of UDDI, which relies on
XML.

XML is here and strong, and there are good, well-enforced standards (as in
The United Nations has embraced XML) in place.
