But surely retrieving OS/400 error messages cannot be the 100% pure Java that is the only thing worth writing (Mr. Ruthledge main point for the business case for Java was its "write once, run anywhere" capability). ---- Leif, you're the only one quoting this stuff. You make your own statements, then use them as your own arguments. I never said anything about what kind of Java is worth writing. On the other hand, you seem to be confused as to what "100% Pure Java" is. "100% Pure Java" is Java code that will run on the standard JVM. Exceptions include things like JINI calls. But if it runs on a standard JVM (as the Java Toolbox does) then it's 100% pure Java. Looking on the Web, I see that even the ProgramCall class is a special AS/400 deal. Thus is not part of Java. ---- You're beginning to make some really weird statements, Leif. The ProgramCall object is a 100% Pure Java class that will communicate with the RMTCMD server of the AS/400. Saying that's not part of Java is like saying that it's not Java to write code that talks to an HP Laserjet printer, because the Laserjet is not Java. You're being silly. Anything that will run a standard JVM is 100% Pure Java. If the program I write using the toolbox can be installed on a Windows machine (or on a Mac or a Linux box) running a standard JVM and still work, then it's 100% Pure Java. And guess what? Any program I write using IBM's JTOpen toolbox WILL run on any platform. It's great! I can write programs that directly access the AS/400 database or directly call RPG programs - and run them on a Sparcstation! All because they're 100% Pure Java! In fact, I can run the COMPILED classes on any platform that supports the standard JVM. That's one of the reasons I think Java is such as important language, especially for UI - it's as close to platform independent as any language I've seen. +--- | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +---
