Development can be a "production" operation. How upset do your developers
get if they can't do anything today because the system is down. We have a
170 here for "play" and it's setup in a 3+1 RAID environment. I wouldn't
think of ever running a system w/o raid (that goes for PCs too). 

As for the "educational environment" question. The Long Island System Users
Group (LISUG), of which I'm the president, is a partner w/IBM and SUNY
Farmingdale in the Partners for Education (PIE) program and their machine is
used for development in a educational environment and they run RAID too. We
didn't even consider it an option when we configured the machine.

Find the nearest whiteboard and write 100 times "RAID = GOOD, NO RAID = BAD"
