Two quick answers.
1) If you need to send the file to someone or alter it, you can opt to use
this method, I found reliable. First, if your organization has a file
server, then your network admin person may be able to allow the AS/400 to
FTP the resulting file to a directory on the file server for you. Set up the
AS/400 job to do the FTP function in the job stream. The absence of this
file will indicate the AS/400 has not run the job, for example on a weekly
basis.
2) Using ODBC connection from excel to your AS/400 file is pretty easy too.
If you need a file just for your purposes, of course the last step of the
AS/400 job could be to copy it to the work file for you. To implement, go
into control panel on your windows computer and look for ODBC Data Sources.
It is in "admin tools" using Windows 2000. Once you add the ODBC data source
to your own Windows computer, you can start Excel, Select DATA, GET EXTERNAL
DATA, NEW DATABASE QUERY, select your ODBC Source. Depending on your version
of Windows, you can do it all from Excel.

The good part, once you get the first one set up to be usable in your
organization you have a method to use for other needs.

The bad part, using ODBC is a no-no for data integrity in the hands of
users. You may or may not be able to do it since I do not know who you are
on the system. I always click "read only" under the connection type, that
way their is no accidental data alterations. If their is another person
involved in the admin, this setting might be considered safe enough to
proceed.
