I have images of a smokefilled room (well, more likely a pizza and Jolt-filled room) somewhere near Armonk, with a bunch of hackers funded by a couple of guys they know only as "Frank" and "Lou". Silly and impure, perhaps, but it warms my heart just the same. <grin> Joe BTW, guess what is the quickest way to cover up a severe server failure? Why, it's a DNS outage! Whether it's hackers, stupidity or flatout lies, it certainly wouldn't make me want to rush to move my mission critical systems over anytime soon. ---------- Original Message ---------------------------------- From: Douglas Handy <dhandy1@bellsouth.net> Reply-To: MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com Date: Thu, 25 Jan 2001 14:38:21 -0500 >Joe, >Well, that employee must be at it again, because MSN.com is down. >From where I am, so is www.microsoft.com and www.hotmail.com too. All of them have DNS errors -- just like yesterday. So what counts toward "availibility" percentages? If the HTTP servers etc were technically "up" but unreachable due to DNS errors or a DoS attack, can M$ still claim the time in their "up" computation? And if not, has anyone done the math on how far this outage goes towards dropping the percentage? Calling it a 22 hour outage (is it really over yet?) would drop an entire year by 2.5% even if the rest of the year never had a glitch. Or put another way, to get back to 99.999% it would have to stay up non-stop for the next 251 years... If this is an employee mistake, I'll bet he'll be flipping burgers (or coding RPG <g>) soon. But it sure smacks of someone trying to embarass MS after they launched their big advertising campaign.
