This will depend on "what" model...certain models don't switch with
software.... 7852-400(33.6) is a very typical ECS modem and as far 
as I know, there isn't a software way to switch modes. Mode switch
is done by dip switches on modem.

Just as a note, Expedite is a piece of software and the version I
have a customer using, use standard SDLC modems.... I assume you
might have a different version ???

You might want to ask the Advantis folks about that...
