  • Subject: RE: Is mirroring of 660x's load source units still needed?

With the 7xx series equipment you can RAID-5 the load source. So if you are
upgrading the hardware to 7xx or 8xx you do not need to mirror the load
source. Although if it is mirrored, you can swap the failing drive and
mirrored drive, re-IPL, then schedule replacement for a more convenient
time.

Since the days when our machine was a 9406-320, the load source unit has
been mirrored, and the rest of the disk units are all RAID-5. (We have
6606, 6607, and 6603 disk units). We are now up to a 9406-530 running
V4R4.

We are switching to an equivalent box. Is mirroring still required on the
load source unit? Or can RAID5 be used instead?

If we still mirror, do I start RAID on rest of the disk units first, then
come back and mirror the load source units?

We have 6502/6512 disk controllers.
