Dan, I am really happy for you! I am glad that you are upgrading. I was hoping that things worked out for you. Seems like you're too good of a man to be stuck behind. There are so many things I've picked up along the way from those old OS's that I'd hate to go back. We had one division that stayed with V3R7 for too long. It was a real pain to support them when I would write a service program which worked on machines except them. Finally got them to upgrade. Upgraded our development machine to a version which wouldn't compile down to V3R7. We keep all their source and they have no compiler. (Yeah, I know, we could have compiled down to V3R2. Any news on when that little function will go away?). Where else but the 400 world do we support archaic versions of the operating system? Do you see upgrades for the legacy versions of Windows 2000 software? 'Hey I just got an upgrade for a DOS, or Win 3.1, version of 123!' Like that'll ever happen. While your point that old 400's will be replaced by something non-400 has some validity, I would like counter that there are other valid points for keeping old 400's without upgrading. Like rock-solid, can't-knock-'em-down stability. I started here about a month ago and was asking the same type of questions, but mainly from a professional growth standpoint. "Why do we have seven AS/400s running V3R2 and V3R7?" "Why not? They never fail. We're well within capacity. So what if IBM withdrew support for V3? What's gonna happen now that hasn't happened yet. yada yada yada." And I'm thinking too, "Why fill IBM's coffers?" From a personal standpoint, it's a real PITA having to write RPG-IV code for V3R2. I think it would be easier to sell them here on RPG-IV if we were using a V4R3+ flavor. I just heard in the past week, however, that there's now a budget for replacing all the AS400s for one big one with an LPAR for each 400 that we're replacing. Can't wait! - Dan Bale -------------------- Original Message -------------------- Here we are consolidating several of our 400's. Once we had 19 AS/400's. Now we are down to 9. Of these 9, only 2 are not running V4R5. Basically signifying that if you are not current, you will be consolidated. I would think that would be a sign in the industry in general. That if you are not current, then management is just nursing you along until they replace the 400 with something else. Just thought I'd launch this balloon. I submitted a suggestion to survey@midrange.com that we find out what versions of OS/400 people are running. We'll see if that one comes up. Don't post to this list.
