But Dow owns the patent. Dow made the guy wealthy, but they did not have to (legally anyway. Morally, they did the right thing). </snip> Not that this really has anything to do with the discussion at hand, but I always thought that Post-It notes were invented by some guys at 3M who had developed an adhesive that turned out to be not very sticky. They didn't know what to do with it, then someone hit upon the idea of using it on note paper. And 3M encourages their staff to invent whatever they want, with 3M's stuff, on their own time. If it takes off, they are handsomely compensated.
