While you considered changing the file open to *update, did you also
consider adding another F spec for another LF with an identical access path,
this one opened for update ?  The separate access path may give you the
isolation needed to reduce overall application design issues.  It would
share the access path yet provide a separate open data path.  It could also
be encapsulated and called.  -DaveK
