Here's how I got more than 8 print files when I was in the S/36 world ... 
should work eqaully well in the AS/400 world.

Program-1 sends printer layout lines to Program-2.
Program-2 accepts printer layout lines in file format & issues report layout.

S/36 also had problem of ceiling on any kind of files per program.
