ISP running MIDRANGE-L etc. is not on AS/400 & is taking forever to get back
into good health after recent melt down.

MIDRANGE-L etc. running in LINUX but not off of an AS/400.

We know, even if IBM & other folks don't, that if both the ISP & MIDRANGE-L
were on AS/400, would not be having these problems, but there is an
investment byte there for volunteer project.

Now Midrange_L is full of stories of people struggling with their latest
AS/400 hardware upgrade ... what happens to the old AS/400 box that was
replaced? I think that what happened to ours was that the box went to zero
value do anything with it, but the OS/400 actually on it had IBM hands tied
what could be done with it. Even though we paid for an old OS/400 version we
not have any more, we not allowed to leave it on an old AS/400 box passed
along to anyone other than IBM.

So the question I am proposing bandying around ... when we trade in our old
3-5 year old AS/400 that is now worthless to us & to IBM, would there be any
practicality in giving it as a gift to MIDRANGE-L & midrange-l ISP? I think
the issues are:

The old box is considered to have NEGATIVE value ... someone has to pay
shipping costs to IBM scrap yard.
The main value of the box is if OS/400 is allowed to be on it, something IBM
not want because they want people to be buying new AS/400 boxes. If this
works for MIDRANGE-L it will also work for a whole bunch other user groups,
which IBM might consider to be a bad precedent.
We upgrading for good reasons - MIDRANGE-L might not want to be on 6 year old
technology/400.
We nerds might see the value of this notion, but selling our corporate
financial leadership is another animal.
