Mark,

I am doing some similar things and I would address it this way:

Change the data to be fixed column widths; this will eliminate any problems
with the quote sign being used in an alpha field causing problems with the
parsing.

Do all of the formatting inside of a Visual Basic for Applications module
(macro).  If someone there knows VB, VBA is almost the same thing.  This
way, your salespeople do what they are paid to do, which is sell stuff -
not - parse data.

You can set it all up so that they just run the macro, select the text file
to import and then watch in amazement as the macro parses the data, resizes
the columns, and does the couple of other things you design to impress the
heck out of them.
