I disagree ... IBM corporate under Lou has zero interest in the products the
future etc., just Lou's retirement bonus based on the stock prices ... IBM
AS/400 guys are reading this & are almost powerless to change IBM corporate
handcuffs on their marketing efforts so individually they make decisions to
use one of the retirement bail out packages, or hang on doing the work they
love in hopes that the madness will not be forever, or attempt career suicide
by using marketing techniques that they are hoping IBM corporate will not see
... IBM corporate does NOT want nitch marketing that is hardware specific &
the end run guys are doing precisely that.

Before the current shake-up, there was a fourth option ... some group of
former AS/400 IBM gurus might have managed to persuade IBM corporate to sell
out the AS/400 division to them, in which IBM would have retained some
financial investment, but the deal would have been engineered to maximize IBM
stock price, which is the only thing IBM corporate wants, in exchange for the
AS/400 IBM gurus to get what AS/400 lovers want ... control of AS/400 future
by people who really care about it.
