I know almost nothing about the specific equipment involved, but I think what
you need is to determine

Can the hardware error message, that you want to trigger a stopping of the
printing, be communicated beyond the hardware to emulate some AS/400 message
that would stop the printing & which you do not often get on other equipment,

in which you could adjust the second level MSGF for that error message to
alert the users as to what the probable scenario really is.

Then, given that you can get it to stop when you want to, then you might want
some automated response to the message where you do not want to stop, where
the specific device designation is involved in the response, so that if this
message comes from any other printer, you can react differently.

We have had PC printer problems in which a PC guru (I am not one) was able to
get into the MACRO CODE for the PC printer & have it talk to the AS/400
printer data stream, to handle scenarios that were outside the capabilities
of what configuration/400 the PC printer was emulating.

Sorry I could not be more helpful
