At the last Common, Chuck Stupca and one other person that I don't remember
right at the moment, said that IBM had also done a lot of work in the
operating system to reduce the need to IPL. They had identified IPLs as
something that didn't make customers happy and as something that they could
fix - so they did. If you are at V3R7, I might still IPL once in a while.
If I were at V4R2 or later, I would IPL when I had to or if IBM told me to.

At 02:14 PM 7/17/00 -0400, you wrote:

The reason that we IPLed CISC systems regularly, was that with 48 bit
addressing that you could run out of addresses eventually.

Today with 64 bit addressing, literally every AS/400 in world could share
the same address space with every other AS/400 in the world, and you
couldn't run out of addresses.

Seriously speaking, the number of IPLs that you for cume packages and new
releases is sufficient. The only other think that an IPL does is clear out
QRPLOBJ, and I have put in a request into the lab to have this changed to a
clean up option, as the CO CLEANUP option will have to be changed in the
next release with the de-support of OfficeVision.
