Know the feeling: We lost approximately 20K worth of computers/network equipment when our office was hit last month. The 400s were on UPS, but we lost a total of 8 comm lines on 3 AS/400s.. The lightning also took out phone service at the pole (4 out of 25 POTS lines). We think that is where the actual strike was.. Our phone system fried a couple of boards in it and had to be replaced. Fried everything on the network side.. Our CISCO router and Firewall survived, but the CSU/DSU multiplexor didn't make ($4500) piece of equipment.. We were back up and running internally (No internet) in a couple of hours (Lost 3 switches) used a spare HUB that allowed 16 people to do something.. We were completely back up and running by 2:00 PM the next day. Insurance is the only thing that will cover this damage. The AS/400 comm lines are not covered under maintenance if they are fried by lightning. All of the other equipment is the same, must be replaced by insurance. Is there anything to protect you if the hit comes in via phone lines??? Everything that was fried was because of some phone line connection. RAS Box (4 modems and Digi Board), PCs with modem lines connected (some machines were on, some machines were off), AS/400, CSU/DSU (T1 Line), 2 Fax machines (Ohh.. The surge surpressor also had the phone line port) Michael Franchino Custom Systems Corporation (973) 383-7808 X214 (Phone) (973) 383-6398 (Fax) "Jim Franz" <franz400@triad.rr. The AS/400 runs fine. The 400 & most network equip on large UPS all survived. (Their network tech put some RAS servers outside computer room & they died-idiot). All the hubs in office damaged. My question is the CISCO router. Was on UPS & powers up ok, but the tech described the CSU/DSU port as "fried". Is there such a thing as T1 cable surge suppression? I asked router tech & he has no clue. I asked telco tech & he had no clue.
