The issue that is being ignored is the issue of brand name and product
differentiation. IBM had no desire to make their platforms mere
commodities. That is not IBM's tradition nor is it a very successful
business model. Suggesting that IBM's computer architecture is going to
meld into the vast PC hardware landscape is just a conjecture serving no
real purpose. The question really becomes "How does IBM intend to
differentiate their product?" In my opinion IBM needs to explain that
early and often or we will be forced to the only remaining choice of
'who's cheapest today?'

and users didn't want OS/2 dead...

The point Jon is making and you will ultimately have to accept, is that
once
again, like DDS vs SQL, SEU is a _single_ platform issue, not a widely
accepted tool outside of the (ultimately dead) 400 platform.

Before the 400 dead platform flames begin... they changed the bus
architecture from SPD to PCI, they have AIX running on the power PC chip
in
the 400 (PASE) so... ergo... utimately, commodity hardware platforming. In
this light, one platform (not proprietary 400) and multiple operating
systems (Linux, OS/400, AIX, NT...)

just a casual observation based on past performance... purely
conjecture...
my opinion may not reflect those of my employer... (oops, that's me, tee
hee!)
yes, jon, i know, another beer... ;-)
