The grouping and conditional capabilities make it much more powerful than DDS. I had to write a special command to execute DDL so that I can use it with Implementer. I like to use SQL in RPG because it allows me to put the grunt work in the SQL and concentrate on the things that really need programming. I also agree that the compiler directive method of coding is less than optimal. Something closer to the look and feel of an SQL stored procedure would be ideal. Although that is in reality a single command, it feels just like a program. Some kind of begin and end block construct that allows multiple SQL statements in line would be a big help. By the time you get done writing 5 or 6 /SQL EXEC blocks with the requisite tests for SQL code or state between them, it can become really hard to find the program. The power makes the down side tolerable, but it's sure ugly.
