RE: Duplicating a library.

I researched a way to do this with large JDE history files (10,000,000
records per file) at a client I worked for.  They needed to be able to
update a research environment with current data.

We did this weekly and needed the fastest way possible to do it. (There was
a total of 25,000,000 records copied into 8 physical files with 65 logicals)

We wrote a CL to cpyf the records from production into a hold library first.

It is important to note that when you use cpyf over an indexed physical file
it will read the file by the index unless you put a 1 in the FROMRCD
parameter.  This is real important as it allows the copy to read the file
sequentially (in arrival sequence) and use look ahead logic in the copy.
This will improve performance a lot.  Also, submit the job to a batch
subsystem with a lot of memory.  Save / Restore and any process that
manipulates large volumes of data will run many times faster with more
memory to work with.  In fact when we did this, we submitted the job to
batch at night after increasing the memory in the subsystem.

We then moved the data by tape to the development system and cpyf the
records into the test database.  Prior to the copyfile's running we executed
a CL to remove all the members from all the logicals.  This prevents DB/2
from building the access paths as the records are added.

After the data was put back we ran another CL that submitted 1 job for every
one of the logicals to put the members back.  By submitting 1 job per
logical we were able to multi thread the rebuild and take advantage of the
ability of OS/400 to create multiple access paths concurrently.
