To do M$'s vpn you need either NT Workstation or NT Server. There's something along these lines in 98, but I haven't played with it. NT Workstation allows you to set up a VPN server, but it only handles a single connection. Server allows multiple (maybe dozens - I don't know what the practical limit is). Yes, I do have VPN available for the time sharing service. Most of the traffic comes through a regular proxy server since it's easier to set up and manage. Some services (like Code/400) require connections to be set up from the host as/400 back to the client. This gets difficult with a proxy server, so in those cases the subscribers will typically use VPN. Don't bother with 95 for any networking host type stuff - not proxy servers, not VPN hosting (even if it does it, which I don't know if it does). 95 stinks as a proxy server platform. It's _supposed_ to work, but just plain DOESN'T (hence my hesitation for using 98). NT Workstation on the other hand works perfectly (in my experience). Re the firewall - if you have one at your end it may very well make a difference. To do VPN stuff, you'll need ports 47 and 1723 opened up. Those are the only ones required for VPN. If all you want is VPN, close all the other ports. Get yourself an NT WS box and print out whatever you can find from M$'s knowledge base about setting up VPN. It takes a little tinkering to get it working, but it's pretty cool stuff. We do consulting for this kind of thing if you're interested, but it's a fun project if you have the time to tinker. Good luck. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Have it both ways... the performance improvement of purging _and_ access to historical data!
